One way to glimpse inside the locker room is to examine the team captains. Are these truly real impact, game-changers?
The five Texas players chosen as team captains for the 2019 season absolutely fit the bill.
Quarterback Sam Ehlinger, center Zach Shackelford, receiver Collin Johnson, safety Brandon Jones and defensive end Malcolm Roach were all named team captains, the university announced on social media.
All but Ehlinger are seniors, yet all five are critical to the Horns’ success at their respective positions. Ehlinger is a junior. Perhaps coach Tom Herman was telegraphing this ahead of time as all five players represented UT at Big 12 media day in July, along with linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch.
Ehlinger has already been named as a possible Heisman contender after leading the Horns to a 10-4 finish last season. He’s played his entire career behind Shackelford, who will be a four-year starter when his career is complete. Johnson has amassed 2,065 career receiving yards and 12 touchdowns the last three years.
On defense, Jones has made 147 tackles the last three seasons. Roach has 94 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and five sacks for his career.
Texas opens the season against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 31 at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
