An unorthodox first career goal for Kailey Smith helped spark Texas to a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at Myers Stadium.

Smith scored 46 seconds into the match on a sweetly struck right-footed volley that smacked the right post and hit Islanders goalkeeper Kyleigh Hall in the leg before trickling across the goal line.

“I got little nervous for a second that I was gonna miss, but then it hit off her and went in and I was just so excited,” Smith said.

Initially marked as an own goal, credit eventually went to the sophomore midfielder from California. Either way, it ended a four-match trend of opponents scoring before the Longhorns.

“The thing I’m most proud and pleased of this evening is that clean sheet,” Texas coach Angela Kelly said after her team out-shot Corpus Christi 19-8 with 12 shots on goal. “That’s where everything needs to start from.”

Sophomore Julia Grosso continued her hot start to the season, setting up the second goal for junior Haley Berg in the 22nd minute before scoring the third less than 2 minutes later. Grosso now has four goals and two assists in five matches.

Texas moved to 3-2 on the season, and will host Washington at 7 p.m. Friday.
