The computer that spits out the Big 12 men’s basketball schedule simply does not allow Texas to ease into January.
The Longhorns will open Big 12 play on the road for the fourth time in coach Shaka Smart’s five seasons, according to the league schedule released Wednesday. That fifth game? Kansas, then reigning Big 12 champion, was sent to Austin to start the 2018 conference schedule.
This season, Texas will open at Baylor on Jan. 4. Then, it’s back home for two games against Oklahoma and Kansas State before a road trip to Oklahoma State on Jan. 15.
Kansas visits on Jan. 18, and then UT has a quick turnaround with a Monday trip to West Virginia two days later. It’s the first of four Monday night appearances this season, with two coming on ESPN’s “Big Monday” window.
After a non-conference game against LSU, Texas returns to league action with a trip to Fort Worth to face TCU on Jan. 29
The Horns open February with three of four home games — Iowa State (Feb. 1), at Kansas (Feb. 3), Texas Tech (Feb. 8) and Baylor (Feb. 15). Smart’s club then alternates home and away the next four games before closing at Tech (Feb. 29) and at OU (March 3) and then hosting Oklahoma State (March 7).
