Sug Sutton sparks Longhorns in road win over Kansas State

Senior guard scores 16 points, including 11 in fourth quarter.

Senior guard Sug Sutton scored 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as Texas wrapped up a 71-63 victory over Kansas State on Sunday in Manhattan, Kan.

Sutton was the game’s top scorer and added six assists and three steals as the Longhorns improved to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12. The Wildcats fell to 7-8 and 1-3.

Texas used a 17-9 edge in the second quarter to build a 35-26 halftime lead, But Kansas State had the hot hand in the third quarter, outscoring UT 20-17 to cut the margin to six going into the final period.

But that’s when Sutton took charge as she scored in double figures for the 11th time this season and the fourth time in the past five games. She was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

She was joined in double digits by teammates Celeste Taylor, with 15 points, and Jada Underwood, with 11. Taylor, a freshman, had a career-best four 3-pointers, and she racked up seven steals, also her best total.

The Longhorns had 21 steals, tied for sixth-best in school history. They also had 11 3-pointers, which equaled their season high against UT Rio Grande Valley on Nov. 20.

Charli Collier led Texas in rebounding with eight, and Joyner Holmes added seven.

Angela Harris had 16 points to lead the Wildcats, Ayoka Lee scored 12, and Christianna Carr added 10.

Kansas State had 38 rebounds to Texas’ 36, just the sixth time in 17 games that the Longhorns have been beaten on the boards. Peyton Williams led the Wildcats with 10, and Lee had nine.

Next up for Texas is Kansas at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Erwin Center.
