Miranda Elish went deep again on Sunday, and a blowout win at home helped No. 6 Texas continue its scorching start to the 2020 softball season.

The 18-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at McCombs Field was UT’s sixth of the season’s opening week. The Longhorns (6-0) also run-ruled each of their opponents. Before this season, Texas had never run-ruled more than four consecutive foes.

On Sunday, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-4) got its first three batters aboard and struck first on a run-scoring fielder’s choice. Texas responded with three runs in the first inning’s bottom half before adding six runs in the second session. The biggest of UT’s early swings came from Elish, a senior who smashed a grand slam in the second inning.

The grand slam was the fourth home run of Elish’s young season. It also gave Elish her 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th RBIs. Over 124 at-bats in 2019, Elish contributed six home runs and 27 RBIs.

Up 9-1 after Elish’s blast, Texas emptied its bench. Texas’ 15 hits were split among 12 players, and seven Longhorns collected an extra-base hit. Freshman Courtney Day started as UT’s designated player but earned her first-career win after pitching three innings of shutout relief.

Around the bases: Texas coach Mike White said junior catcher Taylor Ellsworth, who was one of three Longhorns who didn’t play on Sunday, is day-to-day with a knee injury. … For the first time in 127 starts, All-American second baseman Janae Jefferson started at shortstop. … Freshman outfielder Alyssa Popelka earned her first collegiate hit. Popelka attended nearby Westwood High. … Starting this Thursday, Texas will participate in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. Among the teams that Texas will meet in Mexico are No. 12 Tennessee, No. 21 Ole Miss and Mexico’s national team.
