Each of the Longhorns’ highly-ranked players fell in singles action as No. 13 Michigan bested the No. 4 Texas men’s tennis team 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., on Saturday.

Texas won the doubles point but managed to win just one singles match.

“Michigan played some really good tennis and was more opportunistic when they were ahead,” head coach Bruce Berque said. “Some of the times when we had a chance to finish sets we didn’t do it. Michigan did a better job of finishing their opportunities.”

Texas had a strong start, with Ito and Cleve Harper beating Harrison Brown and Ryan Fu 6-3 in doubles. Jacob Bullard and Eliot Spizzirri clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (6) win over Nick Beaty and Andrew Fenty.

Beaty tied the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Spizzirri to kick off singles action.

Ondrej Styler topped Sigsgaard 6-3, 6-4 before Fenty beat Ito 7-5, 6-4. That gave Michigan a 3-1 advantage.

Harper kept Texas alive with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Fu before Johnston clinched against Woldeab.

Texas next plays No. 8 Stanford in a consolation match Sunday at noon.
