The Texas softball team went toe to toe with the No. 1 UCLA Bruins, eventually coming away with a 6-4 win in eight innings Thursday night in Los Angeles.
Mary Iakopo and Lauren Burke hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth to lift the No. 3 Longhorns (17-2) to the win. The victory is the Longhorns’ second over a top 10 team in three days and ended the Bruins’ 23-game winning streak. Texas defeated No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette 2-1 on Tuesday.
Miranda Elish allowed four runs in eight innings while striking out seven to hand UCLA its first loss. She didn’t allow a run in the final three innings to improve to 8-2.
Texas took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning off a two-run homer by Taylor Ellsworth.
The Bruins (15-1) fought back, however, tying the game in the next inning. Aaliyah Jordan homered to drive home two runs in the fifth.
UCLA got on the scoreboard first when Maya Brady hit a fly ball that allowed Kinsley Washington to score.
Texas took the lead in the second inning on a fly ball by Janae Jefferson. The sacrifice brought home MK Tedder. Earlier in the inning, Reagan Hathaway hit an RBI single to score Elish.
A single by Wisz tied the game 2-2 in the third.
Iakopo and Elish both went 2 for 4. Elish scored two runs to help her cause in the circle.
The Texas softball team next takes on No. 2 Washington on Friday at 5:45 p.m. at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
