No longer in a complementary role, Texas forward Charli Collier has been paid a compliment by the Big 12.
On Monday, the Big 12 announced that Collier was one of 10 first-team honoree on its all-conference team. During the regular season, Collier led Texas in scoring (13.1 points per game) and rebounding (10.5 per game). Collier’s 16 double-doubles rank fourth in the conference.
A 6-5 sophomore, Collier has started in all 30 of Texas’ games this season. One of the Class of 2018’s top recruits, Collier made one start while averaging 14.4 minutes per game as a freshman.
Collier was joined on the Big 12’s honor roll by Texas guards Sug Sutton and Celeste Taylor. Sutton made the second team after averaging 10.4 points and 4.1 assists per game during her senior season. A three-time winner of the Big 12’s freshman of the week award, Taylor was a unanimous pick for the conference’s all-freshman team.
The Big 12 honored Baylor forward Lauren Cox as its player of the year. Baylor’s Kim Mulkey (coach) and DiDi Richards (defensive player) and Kansas State center Ayoka Lee (freshman) took home three of the other big awards.
The Big 12’s tournament for women’s basketbal is set to get underway in Kansas City on Thursday. The following day, Texas (19-11, 11-7 Big 12) will open its postseason run against West Virginia (17-12, 7-11). Texas and West Virginia are the tournament’s third and sixth seeds.
