Before getting a chance to even practice in the WNBA, former Texas starters Joyner Holmes and Sug Sutton were waived this week.

Sutton was waived by Washington on Monday, and a similar decision involving Holmes was made by Seattle a day later. Last month, Holmes was taken by Seattle in the second round of the WNBA’s draft. Sutton was a third-round pick by the Mystics.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, neither Holmes or Sutton had trained with their WNBA teams yet. The WNBA franchises, however, still had to meet this Tuesday’s deadline that ensured that rosters only had 12 players on them. The WNBA will begin paying its players for the upcoming season on June 1.

With that deadline looming, Washington cut both of the players it drafted. Seattle severed ties with two of its three picks.

The lack of a training camp and practices surely hurt Holmes and Sutton’s professional prospects, but both Longhorns were already facing an uphill climb. Last season, five of the 12 second-round selections from the 2019 draft failed to appear in 10 games. Only one third-round pick played 10 times.  Ahead of the 2020 draft, ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo also predicted that it would be tough to make it with Seattle and Washington because of the veterans left on those rosters.
