Six Longhorns recognized during this week’s release of preseason watch lists

Posted July 24th, 2020

Over the course of this week, six Longhorns were placed on preseason watch lists for some of college football’s biggest prizes.

Who will these committees been keeping their eyes on this fall?

  • LB Joseph Ossai: Butkus Award (top linebacker); Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player)
  • DB Caden Sterns: Thorpe Award (top defensive back); Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player)
  • OL Samuel Cosmi: Outland Trophy (top interior lineman)
  • P Ryan Bujcevski: Ray Guy Award (top punter)
  • DB/KR D’Shawn Jamison: Hornung Award (most versatile player)
  • QB Sam Ehlinger: Maxwell Award (most outstanding player)

UT is familiar with most of the aforementioned honors. In fact, Texas is a four-time recipient of the Maxwell Award since Tommy Nobis (1965), Ricky Williams (1998), Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2009) are previous winners.

Derrick Johnson won the Butkus Award and the Nagurski Trophy in 2004, and Brian Orakpo brought home the Nagurski Trophy in 2008. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Michael Huff and Aaron Ross secured back-to-back Thorpe Awards for Texas. Three Longhorns — Scott Appleton (1963), Nobis (1965) and Brad Shearer (1977) – have earned the Outland Trophy. Michael Dickson, who is Bujcevski’s cousin, secured the Ray Guy Award three years ago.

Ehlinger also earned a spot on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy. That award is given annually to the “college football player that best combines exemplary community service with academic and athlete achievement.” The Wuerffel Trophy was awarded to former UT linebacker Sam Acho in 2010.
