Second-half goals by Jessica Parque and Chance Schnornstein gave University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos a 2-0 win over Texas Friday night in Santa Barbara.
Parque’s goal in the 57th minute put the Gauchos ahead, and Schornstein’s strike in the 86th minute sealed the win for the Gauchos (1-2-1). It was the first win of the season for UC Santa Barbara.
Texas (1-2-1) has lost two of its past three matches and have been shutout in three straight. Top-ranked North Carolina beat the Horns 2-0 last Friday and Texas had a scoreless tie with Ohio State last Sunday. Texas’ only goal of the season came in the Longhorns’ 1-0 win over Miami in Texas’ season opener.
Texas has a tough test on Sunday, 14th ranked UCLA. The Bruins held a 1-0 first half lead over defending national champion Virginia on Friday, but eventually fell 2-1.
The Longhorns out-shot the Gauchos 4-3 in the first half, but were unable to put a shot on frame. Santa Barbara put three shots on the Texas goal and held a 4-0 corner kick advantage in the first half.
In the 57th minute, Mallory Hromatko sent a cross behind a Texas defender and Parque sent a shot to the top right corner of the net past Texas goalie Abby Smith.
Hromatko’s corner kick with less than five minutes left found Schornstein entering the top right corner of the penalty box. Schornstein slid and lifted the ball over Smith and into the far left side of the goal to make it 2-0.
Smith had four saves in the loss.
