The Texas soccer team opened its Big 12 season with a 2-0 loss to fifth-ranked West Virginia Friday night in Morgantown, W.Va.
Hannah Abraham’s goal in the 36th minute and Ashley Lawrence’s strike in the 52nd gave the Mountaineers their ninth-straight victory. West Virginia (10-1) has out-scored opponents 25-0 in the nine-game span. It was West Virginia’s tenth shutout of the season, Texas (3-3-3) has been shutout five times this season.
Texas goalie Abby Smith was under constant pressure by the West Virginia offense. The Mountaineers out-shot Texas 31-5 and put 12 shots on frame. Smith had ten saves in the loss and leads the Big 12 with 57 saves. The loss snapped Texas’ four match unbeaten streak.
Abraham put West Virginia ahead in the 36th minute when she headed in a pass from the right wing past Smith. In the 56th minute, Lawrence was battling a Texas defender and put a shot into the right side of the net.
