Alexa Adams’ goal in the 60th minute put Texas ahead and her strike in the 80th minute gave the Longhorns a 2-1 victory over Iowa State Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Adams’ brace was the first of her collegiate career and the first for a Texas player since Olivia Brook scored twice against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last September.
“She’s (Adams) been creating opportunities for herself all season,” Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. “I was really pleased for her and just excited the team could celebrate two great goals.”
The victory moved Texas (5-3-4, 2-1-1) up to second place in the conference with six points. West Virginia (11-1) leads the Big 12 at 2-0-1 and Baylor (7-5) is in third place at 2-1. The loss dropped Iowa State to 0-5 in conference play.
The Longhorns fired 15 shots in the first half and dominated possession, but put only three shots on frame.
Texas went ahead in the 60th minute when UT’s Mikayla Flores kicked a shot that missed high and bounced off the crossbar towards Adams. Adams got the rebound on the left side of the box and drove a shot into the top right corner of the net.
In the 67th minute, Texas goalie Abby Smith was called for a foul after colliding with a Iowa State’s Koree Willer. Willer tied it when she put the penalty kick into the upper left side of the goal.
UT’s Kelsey Shimmick headed a pass to Adams in the 80th minute and Adams kicked it in from 24 yards out to take the lead.
Iowa State’s Taylor Wagner attempted to hit the equalizer with 2:50 left, but Smith made the save. Smith had three saves in the match and leads the Big 12 with 70 this season.
