No. 2 Texas wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a four-set victory (25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19) over New Mexico State on Saturday at the Wildcat Classic in Tucson.
The Longhorns won three matches at the event, including a five set victory over 16th ranked Arizona.
“It’s great that we went 3-0. Three matches in 24 hours is asking a lot. Arizona and New Mexico State both played really well.” said head coach Jerritt Elliot. “Now we can go back and get ready to play for another Big 12 Championship.” said Elliot.
UT’s Amy Neal led the Longhorns with 16 kills and had eight digs and three aces. Texas’ Chiaka Ogbogu tied her career-high with 15 kills, hitting .406 in the match, and Paulina Prieto Cerame put down 13 kills. Texas senior Molly McCage had 10 kills and hit a team-high .474.
New Mexico State’s Gwen Murphy had 16 kills and hit .370.
In the first set, The Longhorns broke an 18-18 tie with three straight points to go up 21-18. The Aggies responded with three straight to knot the score at 21-21. A kill by Neal put Texas ahead and Ogbogu closed the set with three kills.
The Aggies missed two chances at match point in the second set, then won it with an ace by Taylor Livoti.
New Mexico pulled within one at 24-23 in the third, but Texas closed on a Prieto Cerame kill to take the set.
Tied at 12-12 in the fourth, Texas went on a 6-2 run and held the lead the rest of the set.
Texas will begin conference play on Wednesday against TCU at 7 p.m. at Gregory Gym.
