Comin’ On Strong Tour: Breaking down the offense

Posted April 24th, 2014

At every stop of the Comin’ On Strong Tour, Charlie Strong has been asked about the quarterback situation. With eight more events, including one Thursday night in Tyler, the Texas coach joked that he’s open to any and all suggestions.

Everybody wants to talk about the quarterback position,” Strong said this week.

David Ash’s injured foot and Tyrone Swoopes’ development aren’t the only topics up for discussion on the Tour, though. At each stop, Strong goes through a fairly thorough breakdown of the Longhorns’ offense and defense.

With that in mind, here’s a transcript of what Strong said about the offense during the Tour stop in Dallas this week. He gave generally the same outline in Fort Worth and Houston. We will feature his comments about the defense on Friday on Bevo Beat.

“Ash ended up injuring his foot, but I will say the young man has a lot of toughness,” Strong told the Dallas crowd. “Everyone always wanted to question his toughness, but he did have a lot of toughness in spring practice. Then the foot injury came, but he’ll be able to bounce back and he’ll be with us.

“Then with Tyrone…you know with Tyrone, he missed a couple of throws (at Saturday’s spring game), but there’s no need to get all shook up about the quarterback position. You have to have enough players around him. And we have enough players around him.

“If you look at the running backs, Malcolm Brown had an unbelievable spring,” Strong continued. (Editor’s note: This line drew huge applause.) “I have not had a chance yet to watch Johnathan Gray, because he was injured. But everybody says that he’s an outstanding player also. And we’ll get (Joe) Bergeron back. You get Bergeron, you get (Jalen) Overstreet, so you should be pretty solid at the running back position.

“Now the offensive line with (Desmond) Harrison at one tackle, you got Kennedy (Estelle) at the other tackle and you’ve got (Dominic) Espinosa inside (at center). Taylor Doyle at one guard and you’ve got Sed Flowers at the other guard. Once we get (Kent Perkins) back, he hurt his knee, he’ll be back probably middle of July also. Once we get Perkins back, then we feel like we have a chance to shore up that offensive line.

“Then at wide receiver, you just have a collection of players,” Strong added. “Not really great ones, just a good collection with Marcus Johnson, with Daje (Johnson), with (Montrell) Meander and (Kendal) Sanders and with (Jaxon) Shipley. You have an unbelievable group there, a really good solid group of players there at the wide receiver position.

“Then at tight end with (Geoff) Swaim and (M.J.) McFarland, you have two really solid players there, and Willey coming out of the junior college.

“So you always feel like you need a lot more than what we have,” Strong said. “But if I can get some of those guys back on that video, I know I’ll be really good.”
