Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is serious about implementing good sportsmanship. The league office reprimanded Texas linebacker Steve Edmond for his comments about Baylor even though he apologized.
“Mr. Edmond violated the Conference rule that prohibit coaches, student-athletes, athletic department staff and university personnel from making negative public comments about other member institutions,” Bowlsby said in a statement issued by the league office. “Consistent with our standard for such violations he is being issued a public reprimand.”
There was no indication that Edmond would be punished by the Big 12, though. Edmond could conceivably face some additional punishment from Texas coach Charlie Strong, but nothing has been announced yet. On Monday, Strong — on the first day of his Comin’ On Strong Tour, in Fort Worth — told the American-Statesman that he felt Edmond should’ve handled the situation better.
