Best softballer in the Big 12? Texas’ Thom

Posted May 13th, 2014

Texas shortstop Taylor Thom was named the Big 12’s player of the year today.

Thom joins Amy Hooks as the only Longhorns to earn the honor.

Thom, the former Vista Ridge High School standout, also earned her third All-Big 12 first-team honor.

In league play, Thom hit .417 with four homers, 14 RBIs, 19 runs scored and a .769 slugging percentage. Thom, who owns UT’s all-time career RBIs record, was one of two players (Baylor’s Jordan Strickland was the other) to gather multiple Big 12 player of the week awards this season, as she earned the honor in back-to-back weeks (April 9 and April 15)

Freshman pitcher Tiarra Davis was the conference’s freshman of the year, becoming the seventh rookie award winner from Texas and the first since 2011 (Thom).

Davis also was a first-team honoree and led the Big 12 in starts (17) and complete games (12) during league play. The freshman finished tied for second in wins, going 10-5 in conference play. Davis tossed four shutouts and posted a 2.01 ERA while holding opponents to a .223 batting average.

Senior catcher Mandy Ogle also earned first-team accolades, while senior outfielder Brejae Washington and freshman third baseman Devon Tunning took second-team honors. Washington’s selection was her third in her career.

Ogle, Thom and Washington also were selected to the league’s All-Defensive Team.

All-Big 12 and postseason honors are selected in a vote by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. This year’s list had at least one student-athlete make either the first or second team from all seven Big 12 teams.

Texas returns to action on Friday when it takes on Mississippi State in the opening game at the NCAA Lafayette Regional. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Lamson Park, and will be televised on ESPN3.
