Butch Worley, a longtime Texas men’s athletic department official, announced his resignation on Thursday via a posting on the school’s athletic web site.
For many years, Worley was third in command within the department, behind athletic directors DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky. He served almost 27 years for UT and handled countless assignments, including football scheduling.
Worley also handed contracts and was Dodds’ point person in hiring six coaches, including Mack Brown, Rick Barnes and Augie Garrido. His resignation is effective Aug. 31.
Worley has weighed whether to walk away for months, according to a source. Worley was long viewed as Dodds’ top lieutenant, and at one point, Dodds convinced Worley to stay on and help with the transition to new men’s AD Steve Patterson.
“Steve has been wonderful to me from day one, and I sincerely appreciate his patience these past few months as I’ve struggled with this decision,” Worley said in a statement. “Simply put — I just feel the timing is right for a change.”
