Texas’ schedule talk: Kansas

Posted August 15th, 2014

  • Did you know that Texas’ only losses to Kansas came in 1901 and 1938, in Lawrence? The Longhorns are 11-0 against the Jayhawks since.
  • Did you know that Kansas has finished last in the Big 12 the past three seasons? This year’s preseason poll says KU will make it four in a row.
  • Did you know that Kansas is revamping its offense? New offensive coordinator John Reagan has implemented a spread, something that head coach Charlie Weis has been reluctant to try. Weis, the former head coach of Notre Dame and Tom Brady’s QBs coach with the New England Patriots, is an advocate of the pro style offense.

We’re spending these next eight days examining Texas’ 2014 schedule. We’ve already done Texas-North Texas, Texas-BYU and Texas-UCLA.

Game 4: Sept. 27

Memorial Stadium, Lawrence

This should be a cozy introduction into Big 12 play for Charlie Strong’s Longhorns. Kansas is being picked last in the Big 12 for good reason. Without tangible improvement this fall, Weis could be out as Jayhawks coach after three seasons.

Last year, Texas’ 35-13 win at Royal-Memorial Stadium was sparked by Malcolm Brown’s four touchdown runs. Texas, which improved to 6-2 and 5-0, moved a half-game above idle Baylor, a position few would’ve predicted after their 1-2 start.

Kansas, which started 2-1 in 2013, needed almost two full months to pick up another win. Beating West Virginia at home in mid-November prevented Kansas from suffering a third straight winless year in the Big 12.

Texas vs. Kansas: FYI

Storylines: (1) This will be Strong’s first Big 12 game. (2) After three emotional games — the opener/Strong debut against North Texas, the revenge game against BYU, and the Jerry World showdown with UCLA — this one has the makings of a letdown. (3) It’ll be Charlie vs. Charlie, two coaches headed different directions. Is Florida Atlantic coach Charlie Partridge available to officiate?

All-time series: Texas leads, 11-2

Last time: Texas, 35-13 (2013)

Last year: Texas was 8-5, 7-2 in the Big 12 and 3-2 on the road (wins at Iowa State, TCU and West Virginia; losses at BYU and Baylor). Kansas was 3-9, 1-8 and 3-4 at home (wins over South Dakota, Louisiana Tech and West Virginia; losses to Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Baylor and Kansas State).

Numbers game: Kansas has won only three Big 12 games over the past five years. That’s a mark of 3-40, with last place finishes each of the last three seasons.

Texas vs. Kansas, in Austin: 6-0

Texas vs. Kansas, in Lawrence: 5-2
