No. 8: Where should Texas be focusing the rest of its 2014-15 recruiting efforts?

Texas has four months to convince the state’s top senior prospect he wants to be a Longhorn.

Five-star outside linebacker Malik Jefferson of Mesquite Poteet will announce his college decision on Dec. 19.

Charlie Strong would do just about anything to have him.

“For a couple of reasons,” said Jeff Howe, who covers recruiting for 247Sports. “One, because you look at how good the kid is. Two, with him being an early enrollee, the momentum it could give Texas. It would be the biggest game-changer Charlie would have landed in recruiting, without question.”

Jefferson (6-2, 215) will enroll somewhere after Christmas break. He’s said to be considering Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor. He’s the No. 11-ranked overall player in the country, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings of all the industry’s leading sites.

How good of a prospect is Jefferson?

“Malik Jefferson could do for Charlie Strong what Cory Redding did for Mack Brown with that ’99 class,” Howe said.

Brown’s outdueling A&M for Redding, a defensive lineman from Houston, signaled a shift in recruiting power between the schools. With Redding as the catalyst, Brown got Chris Simms, Bo Scaife and Rod Babers and signed the nation’s top-ranked class.

Sixteen years later, A&M has reclaimed its status as alpha dog of in-state recruiting. Headlined by five-star prospects Kyler Murray (QB, Allen) and Daylon Mack (DT, Gladewater), the Aggies’ 2015 class is ranked No. 2 in the nation, behind only Alabama’s.

Mack is said to be wavering, and could switch to Texas. He committed to A&M in October, two months before Strong took over for Brown in Austin.
