Texas coach Charlie Strong addressed the media on Monday’s Big 12 teleconference and addressed injuries, recruiting, and the upcoming bye week.
Strong is conflicted on whether it’s good or bad that his team is idle after Saturday’s tough, 20-17 loss to UCLA. On one hand, he’d like to keep playing and get better. On the other, “It gives it a chance to set in and burn a little more. I kind of like that.”
Strong didn’t have an update on the ankle injury to defensive tackle Desmond Jackson. No other players were injured in the UCLA game, Strong said.
On Josh Turner’s suspension, Strong said the senior safety had a set number of games (two) he had to sit out. That’s interesting, as all along Strong had been saying publicly he had not decided on the suspension length. No word yet on if wide receiver Daje Johnson and offensive tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle will be reinstated for Kansas in two weeks.
Texas announced that the Kansas game will kick off at 3 p.m. and will air nationally on Fox Sports 1.
On freshmen, Strong indicated that those who have not played as of yet are headed for a redshirt year. That includes everyone minus wide receivers Lorenzo Joe and Armanti Foreman, running back D’Onta Foreman, and safety Jason Hall.
Without a game to play, Strong’s coaches will be out recruiting this weekend. “They’ve seen us play,” Strong said of recruits. “They know what our needs are and what we’re looking for.”
