BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Top-ranked Connecticut will have a chance to win its fourth straight Final Four — and 11th overall — after defeating Texas 86-65 Monday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Forward Morgan Tuck scored 22 points and All America senior Breanna Stewart 21 in the victory.
Texas was led by Ariel Atkins and Lashann, who scored 19 points apiece. Brooke McCarty had 15.
Despite the loss the Longhorns (31-5) made progress this season. Last year UT’s season with a 105-54 loss to UConn in the Sweet 16 round in Albany, N.Y.
UConn (36-0) used a 16-6 run late in the first half to pull away. Morgan Tuck and Breanna Stewart had 10 points apiece to help the Huskies take a 46-31 lead at the break.
Texas used a youth brigade early to stay close. Ariel Atkins scored 12 points in the first quarter and reserve freshman Lashann Higgs tallied nine in the half to keep the Horns close.
This marked the final game for four Longhorn seniors — Imani Boyette, Celina Rodrigo, Empress Davenport and Brady Sanders.
