Augie Garrido to miss Saturday’s game to accept award

Posted May 4th, 2016

For someone whose job status is in question, Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido is making a curious decision by skipping Saturday’s game at West Virginia.

The team announced Garrido will coach Friday’s opener before traveling to New York to accept the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations.

Garrido is one of 91 recipients.

Pitching coach Skip Johnson will take over for Garrido, who is expected back for Sunday’s finale.

Texas (21-24, 9-9) sits in fourth place in the Big 12 standings, one spot ahead of West Virginia (24-19, 8-9).
