OKLAHOMA CITY — Baylor has captured the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament for the sixth consecutive season.
All-America forward Nina Davis scored 22 points for the Lady Bears, who defeated Texas 79-63 in the tournament championship game. Alexis Jones added 16 and Beatrice Mompremier 15 for BU.
This marked the 14th straight victory for Baylor over Texas, a streak that started in 2010.
Baylor led 36-25 at halftime. The inside tandem of Davis and freshman Beatrice Mompremier combined for 20 points to help offset a spirited effort by Texas.
Freshman Lashann Higgs had one of her best games as a Longhorn, coming off the bench to score15 points. It was the Cedar Ridge graduate’s highest point total since she scored 17 against Sam Houston on Dec. 27.
Baylor led 12-3 early in the first quarter, but Texas rallied behind reserve forward Kelsey Lang, who would lead the Horns with 8 points in the half. Her 15-footer early in the second quarter sliced BU’s lead to 18-17.
Baylor, though, would outscore the Longhorns 18-5 in the final 7 minutes of the half to take control.
Both teams will learn their NCAA Tournament status when the selection and pairings show is televised next Monday.
The Bears (33-1) are expected to be a 1 seed and be placed in the Dallas regional. The Longhorns (28-4) have been tabbed by ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme to be a 2 seed and be placed in the Sioux Falls, S.D., regional.
