Erin Shireman provided the Longhorns’ only run of the evening as Texas lost its Big 12 opener to the Baylor Bears 3-1 in Waco on Friday night.
Shireman went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, her first of the season, but it wasn’t enough for the Longhorns (19-7, 0-1) to start the conference schedule off on the right foot.
Heather Stearns (12-2) got the win for the Bears (25-6, 1-0) as she allowed one run on just two hits while striking out six in her complete-game effort. Tiarra Davis (11-6) struggled a bit on the night for Texas as she allowed three runs on seven hits while walking five. She struck out seven.
Shelby Friudenburg hit a double in the bottom of the first to set up the first score for the Bears. A wild pitch by Davis allowed Ari Hawkins to score from third base to put the Bears up early.
Davis’ second wild pitch of the night allowed the Bears to double their lead in the fourth inning. Sarah Smith doubled to start the inning, one of her two doubles on the day, and Riley Browder scored later in the inning as a pinch runner.
Shireman’s homer cut the lead to one run in the top of the fifth, but an inning later the Bears struck again. Friudenburg drew a bases loaded walk to add some needed insurance to the Bears’ lead.
The Longhorns will have another shot at the Bears on Saturday night at 8 p.m. in Waco. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
