The second-ranked Texas men’s golf team shot ten over par in the opening round of Fighting Illini Invite on Friday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois and is in 11th place.
Third-ranked Florida State shot seven under par to take the lead and is the only team in the 15 team field under par. Three teams didn’t finish the first round and will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday. No. 5 Stanford is in second place at one over par and 19th ranked Oklahoma State is tied for third with top-ranked Illinois at two over par.
Illinois’ Thomas Detry tied a course record and Rickie Fowler’s tournament record after shooting a seven under par 63 to take the lead. Florida State’s Bennett Baker is in second place at four under par and Stanford’s Maverick McNealy is in third at three under.
UT’s Doug Ghim shot a 68 after making four birdies and two bogeys and is tied for fourth at two under par. Ghim was the only Longhorn under par in the first round.
“Over the years, Olympia Fields has been very challenging for us and today was no different. I think we all got a wake-up call today” said Texas head coach John Fields. “Ghim’s 68 was outstanding and Tayler Termeer was solid with a 72.”
Termeer made four birdies, but had six bogeys and finished at two over. UT’s Scottie Scheffler is two shots behind at four over par and Taylor Funk is tied for 61st at six over. Texas junior Gavin Hall shot a 79 and is tied for 75th place.
