Texas women’s golf team shoots 5-under in opening round in Las Vegas

UT’s Sophia Schubert shot 3-under-par and Longhorns Julia Beck and Tezira Abe shot 2-under-par in the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club on Sunday in Las Vegas.

16 of the 19 teams competing shot under-par and 49 players were under-par in the first round. Michigan and San Jose State share the lead at 13-under-par, followed by Missouri at 11-under. Texas is in tied for tenth place at 5-under-par after shooting a 283.

San Jose State’s My Leander is in the lead after carding a 7-under 65. Teammate Elizabeth Schultz is a shot behind in second place after shooting a 66. Five players are tied for third at 5-under-par and ten players are tied for eighth place at 4-under-par.

Schubert rolled in four birdies and had a bogey to finish with a 69 and is tied for 18th place. Beck had a triple bogey and a bogey, but carded six birdies to finish with a 2-under 70. Abe knocked in four birdies and her only blemish was a double-bogey on the par-3 fourth hole. Abe and Beck are tied with 15 other players in 25th place. UT’s Maddie Luitwieler was 2-over-par and Haley Mills shot 3-over-par.
