The Texas men’s tennis team attempted a late rally in the singles matches but fell short 4-0 to 24th-ranked California on Saturday at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
UT’s George Goldhoff, Michael Riechmann and Julian Zlobinsky were locked in three-set singles matches when Cal’s Billy Griffith defeated Texas’ Adrian Ortiz 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 to clinch the team victory.
“Once again it was kind of a similar match to what we’ve seen lately. We played really hard. We were in position (to win) on a lot of courts, but we’re just having a hard time finishing these matches.” said Texas coach Michael Center.
The Golden Bears won two of three matches to take the doubles point, and Filip Bergevi put Cal up by two with his straight-set victory over Rodrigo Banzer at third singles.
UT’s Harrison Scott took the first set against third-ranked Andre Goransson 7-6 but then dropped the next two sets 6-2, 6-0.
Goldhoff and Riechmann were leading in the third set in their singles matchups and Zlobinsky was tied against J.T. Nishimura when Griffith sealed the win for the Bears.
