Ben Hollas hit a walkoff single in the ninth to beat Texas 4-3 and give the Sooners their first Big 12 series victory of the season on Sunday in Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma’s Alex Wise drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, and after sacrifice bunt and a double by Domenic DeRenzo, Connor Mayes intentionally walked Cade Harris. Hollas lifted a fly ball to right field that Patrick Mathis was unable to get to and the Sooners stormed the field after Wise crossed the plate.
Texas (12-16) dropped to
3-3 in the Big 12 and sits in sixth place in the conference standings. Oklahoma (14-14-1, 2-4) got its second Big 12 victory of the season.
Texas built a 3-1 lead and got a solid start from Kyle Johnston, but a two-run single by Jack Flansburg in the sixth tied
the game. Johnston allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits, walked one batter and struck out three. He gave up a solo homer to Sheldon Neuse in the first, then limited the Sooners to three hits over the next four innings.
Kody Clemens hit a double in the seventh inning and Tres Barrera doubled in the eighth but both were left stranded.
Texas’ Tyler Rand knotted the score with an RBI double in the third and put Texas ahead with a single in the fifth.
Oklahoma starter Jake Elliott gave up two runs on five hits through five innings with six strikeouts.
UT’s Patrick Mathis tripled in the sixth and scored when Kaleb Denny hit a sacrifice fly.
Johnson walked a batter to open the sixth inning and the Sooners got two runners on when Neuse hit a grounder to short that was mishandled Clemens. Travis Duke replaced Johnson after the error and the next at bat, Flansburg hit a single down the left field line that tied it at 3-3.
