Orange-White game called at halftime; Shane Buechele was the big winner

Posted April 16th, 2016

After just two quarters that was Saturday’s Orange-White Game, this much is clear:

Shane Buechele is the leader in the clubhouse.

The freshman quarterback made a strong case for the starting job by completing 22 of 41 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, drawing plenty of oohs and aahs from the crowd at Royal-Memorial Stadium. The 71-yarder for a score to John Burt was perfectly thrown. Buechele doesn’t have a cannon, but he’s got plenty of arm to make throws at this level.

Tyrone Swoopes was victimized by a handful of drops, but completed only 4 of 16 passes for 71 yards and an interception.

If the season were starting next week, the Longhorns would take the field against Notre Dame with Buechele at quarterback. His lone gaffe came at the end of the half when he fumbled after being stripped from behind on a scramble.

There shouldn’t be too much emphasis placed on the spring game; the real heavy lifting will come this fall. But Buechele looks even better than advertised.
