The Rice women’s tennis team rallied in the singles matches to edge Texas 4-3 on Saturday in the two teams’ first matchup in Houston since 1995.
It was just the second time in program history that the Owls (4-1) have defeated the Longhorns. Texas (3-2) leads the all-time series 27-2.
Down 3-2, Rice’s Katherine Ip defeated UT’s Dani Wagland 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) at second singles and Solomiya Zinko clinched the match with a three-set victory over Texas senior Lana Groenvynck 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Longhorns (3-2) fell behind after losing the doubles point and taking a loss at fifth singles, then won three straight singles matches to take the lead.
UT’s Neda Koprcina started the rally with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win against Emily Smith. Texas freshman Daniella Roldan tied it after defeating Alison Ho 6-3, 7-6 (4) and Longhorn Breaunna Addison put Texas ahead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lindsey Hodge at first singles. Addison improved to 21-2 in singles play this season.
