Texas notes

The Longhorns broke a five-game losing streak to the Lady Vols last year, winning 72-59 in Austin behind Kelsey Lang’s 18 points. Curiously, Tennessee’s ranking was No. 4 when the teams met last year, the same as this year. Texas, ranked 8th, is coming off a 79-52 victory over Hampton on Wednesday. Coach Karen Aston is 62-41 in her fourth season with the Longhorns. Texas is looking for consecutive victories over Tennessee since winning four straight from 2002 to 2004.

Tennessee notes

After a 102-47 rout of Central Arkansas to open the campaign, Tennessee has had to work for its last four victories, winning by margins of eight, two, two and eight. Tennessee improved to 5-0 on Friday afternoon, turning back upset-minded UAlbany, 63-55, in front of 9,806 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Mercedes Russell became the fourth different Lady Vol to lead the team in scoring this season, dropping in 12 to go with five rebounds, five blocks an assist and a steal. Tennessee leads the series 23-13.
