Sonny Cumbie expected to talk with Charlie Strong about joining Texas
Texas AD Mike Perrin on whether there's a cap for what UT will pay: 'Not at present'
Posted December 3rd, 2015
Sonny Cumbie is expected to meet with Texas coach Charlie Strong next week after the Longhorns complete their season and talk about becoming UT’s play-caller in 2016, a source close to Cumbie said.
On Monday, Strong said he had not spoken with Cumbie, TCU’s co-offensive coordinator since 2014. The former Texas Tech quarterback finished his playing career and then joined the Red Raiders as an assistant, working his way up to co-offensive coordinator in 2013.
Cumbie has called plays only once in his coaching career — Tech’s 34-31 victory over Minnesota in the 2012 Meineke Car Care Bowl.
Texas athletic director Mike Perrin sidestepped a question Thursday about whether he has begun talks with Strong about remaking the offensive staff. “I’ll deal with that in due time,” Perrin told the Statesman.
Asked if there was a cap on what he’d spend for a new offensive coordinator, Perrin said, “Not at present.”
