Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford loved the fact Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury took a jab at the Longhorns and coach Charlie Strong.
Speaking to university faculty earlier this month, Strong talked up his team’s recruiting efforts and said, “You think about what we’re doing right now, what’s going to happen when we really get it turned? They might as well move out of the way, because we are going to steamroll everyone. That’s going to happen.”
Kingsbury told reporters in Lubbock, “He said that? It’s not April Fool’s yet, is it?”
Bedford, meeting reporters for the first time this spring on Wednesday, simply couldn’t resist.
“So, my man, somebody says it’s April Fools Day,” Bedford said. “Beautiful thing. That’s why I love some of the coaches in this conference and I like when they speak out that way. Because they speak their mind. At the end of the day, he was talking about recruiting, but he was right.
“It’s like anything else,” he added. “If you get the right players in here, and they develop and we get this thing going, we’ll get the University of Texas back where it’s supposed to be. Right now, we’re not there. So I want my boy down in Lubbock, Texas, (to know) it is definitely April Fools Day.
“What day is it anyhow?,” Bedford asked.
Told that it was actually March 30, Bedford said, “I’m one day off. So that’s tomorrow or whoever it comes. But we’re headed in the right direction.”
