Report: Willie Taggart in talks with Charlie Strong about becoming defensive coordinator at Oregon

Posted December 9th, 2016

Where will Charlie Strong go next?

Less than two weeks after he was fired by Texas, it appears there are several schools jockeying for Strong. On Friday, Josh Newberg from 247Sports.com reported that Strong will be in Tampa to discuss the position with USF, but there could be other forces at play. According to the report, Willie Taggart has also been in talks with Strong about him becoming the defensive coordinator at Oregon.

There have been reports that he is one of the “top candidates” to replace Taggart at South Florida, and Cincinnati is reportedly going after Strong as well.

From 247Sports:

Even if Strong is offered the job today, I do not expect a decision to be made at the meeting. A source close to Strong tells me he’s planning to take a day or two to decide. Of course, this all depends on if he’s offered the job today while in Tampa.

If Strong is offered and does accept, I’d expect this all to wrap up by the end of the weekend.

As previously reported, Strong getting hired by another school could offset his buyout by as much as 50 percent. Texas owed Strong “the base salary that coach is receiving at the date of such termination” through Jan. 23, 2019 — an estimated value of $10.4 million.
