Where it went wrong: Chase Shugart, who recently lost his closer’s job, continued to struggle out of the bullpen after entering with one out in the eighth and the score tied 2-2. Shugart fielded a bunt that was going foul for one run and later issued a walk with the bases loaded. In the ninth he gave up three singles in a row for another TU run.

The starter: Kyle Johnston lasted five innings and struck out eight. Neither of the two runs he allowed in the third inning were earned after Jack McKenzie and Bret Boswell made fielding errors. Johnston also pitched the first two innings of Friday’s opener before play was halted because of lightning. He could be on his way to the closer’s role for next weekend’s Big 12 series against TCU.

Top hitter: Patrick Mathis, 2-4, 2B, RBI.

Key stat: Kacy Clemens’ streak of 16 straight games of reaching base has ended. Clemens went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
