It is established Tom Herman doesn’t mind roaming outside of Texas to find talent. The 2018 class consists of eight members and half of those prospects play prep football in a different state. One of them – Justin Watkins – resides in Florida. By the end of the week, Herman hopes to add a second Floridian to #RevolUTion18.

Four-star linebacker Amari Gainer of Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee, Fla. is set to announce his college decision Friday. Texas is among the finalists, alongside Florida State, his hometown school, Miami and Alabama. The 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions suggests Gainer likely remains home and commits to Florida State.
Gainer is the No. 23-ranked outside linebacker in the country and the No. 319 ranked overall prospect in the nation, per 247Sports Composite. At 6-foot-2.5 and 204 pounds, Gainer is built similarly to current Longhorn commit Byron Hobbs, also an outside linebacker.
Expect Texas to take at least two linebackers in the 2018 cycle, even if Gainer chooses to stay in Florida. It isn’t completely over for Texas even if Gainer chooses Florida State this week. Watkins, Texas’ first commit of the 2018 cycle, was also committed to Florida State before flipping to the Longhorns.
