Freshman Cole Hammer advances at U.S. Amateur

Posted August 15th, 2018

Cole Hammer, a freshman UT golfer, advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur in Pebble Beach, Calif. Wednesday.

Hammer defeated Alvaro Ortiz 2 up to move on to face Joshua McCarthy  at 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

The incoming freshman took a quick lead after two holes until Ortiz tied the match on the ninth.

Ortiz took the lead on the 11th before Hammer made par on the 14th to tie the match once again.

A par on No. 16 followed by an eagle on the 18th helped Hammer seal the match.

Hammer finished the stroke play portion of the competition as co-medalist with Daniel Hillier of New Zealand. They finished at 6 under par after 36 holes. It’s the second straight time Hammer has taken co-medalist honors. He did so as well at the Western Amateur, which he won earlier this month.
