Former Texas receiver Daje Johnson heading to Canada to further career

Posted May 23rd, 2017

Former Texas kickoff wiz, and local product, Daje Johnson is continuing his football career with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League, he announced Tuesday.

Johnson, from nearby Pflugerville Hendrickson High School, spent time last season with the Atlanta Falcons organization in the NFL, but never caught on with the official roster. He attended the Texas Pro Day in April in hopes of catching the eye of more NFL scouts, and now he’ll try to revive his career north of the border.

Johnson, who also memorably released a rap album during his college playing days, was one of the most exciting kick returners in the Big 12 during his time on the 40 Acres. He returned two punts back for touchdowns in four seasons and registered a total of 396 yards on punt returns. He also had 976 kickoff return yards. As a receiver, he he caught 85 passes for 837 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 459 yards in his career.

Johnson joins Longhorn legend Vince Young in the CFL this season.
