University of Texas officials unveiled a new clear bag policy that will be enforced at most home sporting events beginning this athletic year.
Fans will be allowed to bring clear plastic bags into Royal-Memorial Stadium and the Erwin Center so long as they do not exceed 12 inches wide, 12 inches tall and six inches across when fully opened.
The new policy is meant to enhance current safety measures and expedite venue entry, according to UT officials.
This is the same policy that has been in effect at NFL stadiums since 2013. Other Big 12 schools that have a similar policy include Kansas, Kansas State, TCU and Texas Tech. USC, the first road opponent for the Longhorns this season, also has a clear bag policy.
“Fan experience is a top priority for Texas athletics,” athletic director Mike Perrin said in a statement. “By implementing this new policy, we are being proactive in enhancing the existing security measures in our venues and expediting the security screening process for fan entry.”
Small clutch bags or purses do not have to be clear, however they cannot exceed 4 1/2 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall. Each person is allowed one large clear bag and one clutch.
Any bag that is not clear plastic and does not meet the size requirements will be prohibited.
According to UT officials, exceptions will be made for medical items after proper inspection at designated areas.
Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at designated areas. There is no check-in location for prohibited bags.
Diaper bags will not be allowed, unless the bag meets the criteria. All items for a diaper bag must be placed into a clear bag, according to UT officials.
“Although we recognize the need for this policy, it is still a big change for our fans,” Perrin said, “especially those who are used to carrying purses, diaper bags or binocular cases. We do not want to turn anyone away at the gate.”
