Good morning and welcome to Breakfast with Bevo, your morning stop for Texas Longhorns news and notes. Check us out every weekday morning for everything you need to know about Texas football, recruiting, basketball and more.
Was it a moral victory in Los Angeles for the Longhorns on Saturday? Texas sits at 1-2 heading into the bye week and won’t play Iowa State for 11 days. With the conference slate yet to kick off, coach Tom Herman’s squad still has a lot to play for, especially a conference championship. That will be a tall order for sure, with No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 6 Oklahoma State on the schedule in October. Despite the loss on Saturday, every Longhorn who emerged in the tunnel after a stunning night in the Coliseum was brimming with confidence. The Texas players should feel confident about the future.
Connor Williams out with left knee injury
Texas officials released a statement on Sunday stating that All-American tackle Connor Williams sustained a sprain of the medial and posterior collateral ligaments in his left knee. Williams also sustained a meniscus tear, which he is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on in the next week to 10 days. Williams’ loss will be a devastating blow for UT’s offensive line and may change the offensive unit’s capabilities for the rest of the season.
5 key plays in the Longhorns’ loss to the Trojans
USC edged Texas 27-24 in double overtime on Saturday. There were many plays that kept moving the momentum back and forth. Danny Davis takes a look at what plays during the game were key to the Longhorns loss on Saturday.
Championship mettle shown by Texas D
Columnist Kirk Bohls discusses the overall highlight for the Longhorns on Saturday night: a stout defense. Tom Herman said in August that Texas would win with defense, and the Longhorns very nearly did in his biggest challenge to date. It offered a vision of what might can be.
Be careful how you handle the QBs, coach
Columnist Cedric Golden argues that a starting quarterback shouldn’t lose his position due to injury. That’s old-school football rules. But Sam Ehlinger “showed some wiggle” on Saturday night. There are plenty of practices between now and Iowa State, but Ehlinger should get every opportunity to finish what he started out West.
