Posted October 7th, 2017

A statistical and scoring breakdown of Texas’ win over Kansas State:

First quarter

Kansas State 3, Texas 0. Sam Ehlinger, making his third start, was intercepted on the game’s first play. Texas then went three-and-out on its second possession. The third time Texas got the ball, Ehlinger guided the offense on a deep drive that got to inside the 5, but Kyle Porter’s 3-yard touchdown run was overturned by replay and Ehlinger’s fourth-and-goal pass to Reggie Hemphill-Mapps was out of bounds. KSU’s Matthew McCrane produced the quarter’s only points, a 54-yard field goal that was the eighth-longest kick in school history.

K-State: Matthew McCrane 54-yard field goal (7:19)

Second quarter

Halftime — Texas 21, Kansas State 17. Ehlinger guided Texas on 71-, 78- and 50-yard scoring drives in its final three possessions of the half. Porter scored his second and third touchdowns of the season on short runs and Chris Warren III got wide open for a 33-yard touchdown catch, a beautifully designed play that had Ehlinger roll to his right, then throw back across the field. Dalton Schoen, a sophomore, entered this game with six career catches. He had three receptions for 100 yards and two scores in the quarter.

K-State: Dalton Schoen 83-yard pass from Jesse Ertz (McCrane kick, 14:01)

Texas: Kyle Porter 1-yard run (Joshua Rowland kick, 9:33)

K-State: Schoen 12-yard pass from Ertz (McCrane kick, 6:29)

Texas: Chris Warren III 33-yard pass from Sam Ehlinger (Rowland kick, 3:25)

Texas: Porter 1-yard run (Rowland kick, :16)

Third quarter

Texas 24, Kansas State 24. The Longhorns, after scoring on all three of their second quarter drives, added a field goal on their first possession — a 34-yarder from Joshua Rowland, his third straight make of the season after opening with three straight misses. Ertz was removed later in the quarter after he lost his footing on a 3-yard run. His backup, sophomore Alex Delton, tied the game with the second touchdown run of his career.

Texas: Rowland 34-yard field goal (10:15)

K-State: Alex Delton 2-yard run (McCrane kick, 3:37)

Fourth quarter

End of regulation — Texas 27, Kansas State 27. In the first quarter, Texas faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3 and Tom Herman opted to go for it. The decision resulted in no points, which loomed large late in the game with the game tied. Rowland missed two field goals in the quarter, one from 27 yards and one from 45 yards with 2 seconds left. It just missed to the right, forcing Texas’ second overtime game of the season.

K-State: McCrane 33-yard field goal (12:19)

Texas: Rowland 34-yard field goal (1:37)

Final — Texas 40, Kansas State 34 (2 OT). Ehlinger hit Jerrod Heard for a quick touchdown to open the extra period, but Delton and the Wildcats answered. Two key holding penalties doomed Kansas State’s second overtime drive, however, and McCrane, who’d made a 54-yard field goal earlier in the game, missed from 53 yards out not once, but twice. The Longhorns, needing only a field goal, won it on a short Warren run that was propelled by five Longhorns pushing the pile forward.

Texas: Jerrod Heard 25-yard pass from Ehlinger (Rowland kick)

K-State: Delton 8-yard run (McCrane kick)

Texas: Warren 2-yard run
