Is it Sam Ehlinger’s time, who is best running back at Texas?

Good morning and welcome to Breakfast with Bevo, your morning stop for Texas Longhorns news and notes. Check us out every weekday morning for everything you need to know about Texas football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Sounds like it’s Sam Ehlinger’s time

Tim Beck and Tom Herman have yet to announce the quarterback against Oklahoma on Saturday. But if you talk to Beck, it sounds a lot like he’s ready to go with Sam Ehlinger. When asked how well Ehlinger played in the double overtime win against Kansas State, Beck was complimentary of the freshman. Beck appreciates Ehlinger’s passion and quick decision-making ability. Of course, the freshman has things to work on, but he’s already writing his name in the record book. He became the third UT quarterback to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 in a single game, joining Colt McCoy and Jerrod Heard.

Who’s the best running back at Texas?

As if the quarterback discussion isn’t enough, the running back situation is getting interesting, as well. Is the best running back the big bruiser, Chris Warren III? Or is it Kyle Porter, who leads the team in carries? Maybe it’s freshman Toneil Carter, who has shown some burst? Coach Tom Herman says nobody has separated themselves from the rest. The game against Oklahoma could go a long way to establishing who will lead this team in rushing this year.

The Whys of Texas: All Texas-Oklahoma

Texas beat writer Brian Davis took a look into the mail bag this week and found interesting thoughts. Actually, there was a lot of trash talk. One Longhorn fan wished upon Baker Mayfield a hard, painful hit, although not life-changing. Is he not merciful? Another comment was wishing Mayfield would keep his comments to himself. To be fair, a lot more topics were touched upon by readers. It wouldn’t be a game week if the Texas quarterback situation wasn’t one of those topics.

D’Shawn Jamison announcing college pick Saturday

D’Shawn Jamison, the 4-star cornerback from Lamar High School (Houston), will announce his college decision Saturday. The Longhorns haven’t picked up a 2018 commitment since before the start of September. If Jamison selects Texas over TCU, he’ll expect to contribute not just on defense but on special teams and even offense. Texas coach Tom Herman took a helicopter trip on Sept. 22 to check out the corner along with two of his teammates.

Texas volleyball team tops Kansas on the road

It took five sets, but the Texas Longhorns volleyball team remained undefeated in league play as they topped the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence. Lexi Sun led the Longhorns with 21 kills to help Texas improve to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12. Texas trailed 2-1 before taking the final two sets for the win.

Longhorns in the NFL: Week 5

Marquise Goodwin had a career day, catching 5 passes for 116 yards for the 49ers to highlight Week 5 of the Longhorns in the NFL. Derrick Johnson of the Chiefs and Earl Thomas of the Seahawks had big defensive days to help their teams win.

Former Longhorns team up

Brian Orakpo and Michael Griffin are opening up a Gigi’s Cupcakes next year, Austin American-Statesman restaurant critic Matthew Odam reported Wednesday.
