What Tom Herman said after Texas fell flat in 24-7 loss to TCU

Posted November 4th, 2017

The Texas offense sputtered in a frustrating 24-7 loss to No. 8-ranked TCU on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Longhorns only managed 263 offensive yards, including nine on the ground. After the game, UT coach Tom Herman spoke to the media. Here is some of what he had to say.

On defensive performances by both teams:

“It was very evident that you saw the two best defenses in the conference battle it out.”

On offensive struggles:

“It’s no excuse that (TCU has) the best defense in the conference. When our defense is playing at the level that they’re playing at, we’ve got to do a better job offensively of helping them out.”

“We’ve got to get better. Surprisingly, I think we have. I know it doesn’t feel that way tonight, but I think we’ve made steady improvements in that area.”

On offensive line issues/injuries:

“It’s not the NFL. We can’t go on the waiver wire and pick up free agents. We’ve got to get our guys better and we’ve got to get creative on play calls too.”

On why quarterback Sam Ehlinger didn’t play:

“(Sam) had a setback with an inner-ear issue. It’s been described to me as the concussion symptoms are clearable, but there are some inner-ear issues that prevent him from playing because of balance issues and stuff like that.”

Herman said that Ehlinger is taking anti-inflammatory medicine and needs rest to heal fully after the concussion he suffered two weeks ago against Oklahoma State.

On why Texas stopped throwing deep passes:

“I think they adjusted, too. You saw a little bit more true Cover 2 (defense), where they’re doubling the inside receiver and crowding the corner. It’s definitely something we’ve got to build on. That’s our strength.”

“One-on-one is not covered. We need to do a better job, they’re not even 50-50 balls to me. If you put them in the right spot, they’re 75-25. That’s a hard thing to train with the quarterbacks.”

On mindset moving forward:

“These seniors deserve to go to a bowl game. That’s big picture. We’ve got to worry about Kansas this week, but we understand that will get us one step closer to that big-picture goal.”
