HOUSTON — Trust. It’s a word thrown around in recruiting a lot despite the constantly changing landscape across the country. Texas is trusting Tom Herman to lead it back to the heights of the Mack Brown era and that starts in recruiting. Herman picked up a big target on Wednesday when Houston Lamar cornerback Anthony Cook chose the Longhorns over Ohio State and LSU.
“I trust coach Herman to lead Texas back to a national championship and I want to be a part of that journey to the top,” Cook said after his ceremony. “I trust coach Herman and the rest of the Texas coaching staff to make me the best player and to win football games.”
Cook might not need to wait long to make an impact. The 6-1, 185-pound prospect will enroll early and immediately begin competing for the vacated cornerback spot left by Holton Hill, a fellow Houston Lamar product who has declared for the NFL draft.
“It’s a big advantage to enroll early and get a head start on the rest of the recruiting class,” Cook said. “I’m going in with the mindset to play as a freshman and I need to earn that through my work in the offseason and in the spring.”
Cook became Texas’ 20th commitment in the 2018 class. His Lamar teammates, Al’vonte Woodard and D’Shawn Jamison, signed with Texas early Wednesday morning, taking advantage of the first ever early signing period. The Texas class currently ranks third in the country and first in the Big 12, per the 247Sports composite.
He also joins an elite group of defensive backs heading to Texas. Elite safeties BJ Foster and Caden Sterns also will enroll early, while cornerbacks Jalen Green and Jamison will join safety DeMarvion Overshown on campus in June.
“This class is a monster,” Cook said. “Our goal is to put Texas back on the national map. This class is going to be special for years.”
