Elite 11: Sam Ehlinger sitting outside of day one rankings
Posted June 4th, 2016
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — Sam Ehlinger had a solid first day at the Elite 11 Finals. Apparently, so did many of his competitors.
Ehlinger, the Texas commit and Westlake senior-to-be, was absent from the 11-person initial rankings the Elite 11 released on Saturday morning. He’ll have some ground to make up over the next two days to earn one of 12 bids to The Opening next month at the Nike headquarters in Oregon.
Leading the 24-player field is Stanford commit Davis Mills followed by Hunter Johnson (Clemson), Jack Sears (uncommitted), Tate Martell (uncommitted), Sean Clifford (Penn State), Jake Fromm (Georgia), Chris Robison (Oklahoma), Dylan McCaffrey (Michigan), Chase Brice (Clemson), Avery Davis (Notre Dame) and Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama).
On day one, Ehlinger practiced in a four-man group that also included Clifford and Davis.
Of the top 11, Robison (Mesquite Horn) and Davis (Cedar Hill) are Texans. TCU commit Shawn Robinson (DeSoto), A&M’s Connor Blumrick (Pearland) and recent Baylor de-commit Kellen Mond (San Antonio Reagan turned IMG Academy) are also sitting outside of the top 11.
Ehlinger did some good things on Friday’s first day, eliciting high praise form his instructors and coming within a whisker of drenching Clemson QB Deshaun Watson in a dunk tank.
Saturday’s drills begin at 6 p.m. (8 p.m. CDT).
