After hinting previously he would explore outside options, Charlie Strong now seems content to search from within for Texas’ next kicker.
The battle to replace placekicker Nick Rose consists of former punter Mitchell Becker and walk-ons Jon Coppens and Evan Moore. Becker was the only one of the three to try a field goal in Saturday’s spring game and missed badly from 46 yards.
After the game, Strong was asked about going out this offseason and adding a kicker, to which he laughed and replied, “Gotta get me one somehow.”
His tune had changed three days later when Strong discussed the topic on the Big 12 teleconference.
“We have guys that are on the team right now,” Strong said. “It’s a matter of them being consistent and stepping up and kicking the ball and making sure they are accurate when they do kick it.”
Strong did not sign a kicker in his 2016 recruiting class.
