Texas freshman Jarrett Allen was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Second Team All-District 8 team on Wednesday.
A day after announcing that he would declare for the NBA Draft but not hire an agent, Allen was rewarded for his standout freshman season in which he averaged 13.5 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. Allen got better as the season went, averaging 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in Big 12 play. He hit 59.9 percent of his shots from the field in conference play.
Sweet 16 bound Kansas dominated the District 8 honors with two first-team selections (Big 12 Player of the Year Frank Mason III and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Josh Jackson on the first team), while Kansas coach Bill Self was District 8 Coach of the Year.
Allen is the only Longhorn on any team in the district that includes all 10 Big 12 programs. Outside of Kansas, Only Oklahoma State and Iowa State had multiple members on either first or second team.
