Former Longhorn Jordan Spieth wasn’t able to pull away from the field at TPC River Highlands, but he holds the lead after two rounds of competition at the PGA Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.
Spieth was 1 under on the day as he shot a 69 to hold onto a one-stroke lead over Patrick Reed and Troy Merritt. He’s 8 under par with 36 holes left to play.

The two-time major champion hit a double bogey on the par-5 13th hole but was able to recover enough to maintain the lead. Despite hitting a ball out of bounds and connecting on half the birdies he hit in the first round, he still stayed atop the leaderboard.
Spieth had four birdies on the day compared to eight he had in the first round when he shot 63. He also had a bogey on the par-3 fifth hole on Friday.
Rain is in the forecast Saturday, so Spieth will have some less-than-ideal conditions in the third round. He’ll try to take his second PGA Tour win this year on Sunday.
