Malik Jefferson makes Sports Illustrated top-50 list

Linebacker is only Big 12 defender among top 100 players

Posted July 12th, 2016

Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson made Sports Illustrated’s list of the top-100 players in the country for the 2016 college football season.

Jefferson, the 6-foot-3-inch, 232-pound sophomore wrecker from Mesquite, is No. 48 on the list. Of the 10 Big 12 players who made the top 100, Jefferson is the only one who plays defense.

Writes Chris Johnson:

“Jefferson’s commitment to Texas in December 2014 was viewed as a seminal recruiting victory in the Lone Star State for coach Charlie Strong. But the linebacker could prove even more beneficial on the field during the rest of his tenure in Austin. Jefferson shined as a true freshman last season, racking up 61 tackles and seven tackles for loss, and he enters his sophomore campaign ready to make a leap as the headliner of a Texas defense that brings back seven starters. He’ll get a chance to showcase his ability on a big stage in week 1, when the Longhorns host Notre Dame.”
